Does Insurance Cover Water Damage?
The short answer: it depends on the source. Here’s how insurers generally draw the line in Ohio.
For the full breakdown of how insurers classify water damage versus flood damage — and why the distinction changes which policy applies — see Water Damage vs. Flood Damage: What’s the Difference?
Usually covered under a standard homeowner’s policy
- A pipe that bursts suddenly from winter freeze
- A water heater tank that fails without warning
- Accidental appliance overflow (washing machine, dishwasher)
- Ice dam damage to a roof, in many (not all) policies
Usually NOT covered — needs an endorsement or separate policy
- Sump pump failure or sewer/drain backup (Ohio’s most common basement flooding cause) — usually requires a specific water backup endorsement
- Rising groundwater or surface flooding from outside the home — needs separate flood insurance
- Damage from long-term, known leaks left unrepaired
Ohio-specific note
Because so many Ohio homes have basements, sump pump and sewer backup coverage gaps catch more homeowners off guard here than almost any other type of claim denial. If you have a finished basement, confirming this specific endorsement is in place is one of the highest-value insurance checks you can make.
